Privacy Policy
Typo - Smart Text Rewriter · Last updated: May 3, 2026
Overview
Typo is a browser extension that helps you fix grammar, spelling, and rewrite text with different tones. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data the extension accesses, how it is used, and how it is protected.
Key point: Typo does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data to our servers. We do not have any servers that receive your data. All processing happens locally on your device or directly with third-party AI providers.
Data the Extension Accesses
Website Content & Personal Communications
When you use Typo, the extension reads text you have selected or typed in input fields on web pages. This may include text from email composers, chat inputs, social media posts, or any other text field. This text is:
- Processed locally on your device when using Offline mode
- Sent directly to a third-party AI provider (Groq, OpenAI, or Google Gemini) when using AI modes — the text is sent from your browser directly to the AI provider, never through our servers
- Never stored beyond your current browser session
Authentication Information
If you use Cloud AI mode with your own API key (OpenAI, Gemini, or a custom endpoint), your API key is:
- Stored locally in your browser's extension storage (
chrome.storage.local)
- Never transmitted to our servers or any third party other than the specific AI provider you configured
- Only used to authenticate requests directly from your browser to the AI provider
Data We Do NOT Collect
- Personally identifiable information (name, email, address)
- Browsing history or web activity
- Health or financial information
- Location data
- Keystroke logging, mouse tracking, or click monitoring
- Analytics, telemetry, or usage statistics
- Cookies or tracking identifiers
Third-Party AI Services
When you use AI-powered features, your text is sent to one of the following providers depending on your settings:
- Typo AI mode: Text is sent to Groq for processing
- OpenAI: Text is sent to OpenAI using your own API key
- Google Gemini: Text is sent to Google using your own API key
- Custom endpoint: Text is sent to whichever URL you configure
Each provider has its own privacy policy governing how they handle data. We encourage you to review their respective policies.
Data Storage
The extension stores the following data locally on your device only (never transmitted externally):
- Your AI mode preference and settings (theme, tone, limits)
- API keys you enter (encrypted by the browser's extension storage)
- Temporarily: selected text during your current session
You can clear all stored data at any time by removing the extension.
Permissions
The extension requests the following permissions:
- activeTab: To read selected text from the current page when you activate Typo
- storage: To save your preferences locally
- contextMenus: To add a right-click "Rewrite with Typo" option
- clipboardWrite: To enable the "Copy" button functionality
- Host permissions (API URLs): To communicate with AI providers
Children's Privacy
Typo is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date.
